yoga Therapy

“Yoga begins with looking at what is right with me. It is the art and science of living and is concerned with the evolution of mind and body. It provides us with a system of possibilities to integrate all aspects of our development. For Young people this enables us to acknowledge how we feel rather than to repress our experiences, enabling growth and change”. Amy Weintraub

Neuroscience and research into child development, trauma & mental health has moved quickly in the last few years. This growing body of research not only supports but advocates the importance of body based therapeutic interventions such as yoga, meditation, breath work and somatic enquiry as healing modalities. For a long time the mind and body were treated as separate entities, we are now some way to understanding the inextricable links between this connection.  I offer a holistic, integrative approach that acknowledges physical health is not separate from mental and emotional wellbeing.

Therapeutic yoga and somatic movement may seem very different to what people have come to understand as ‘yoga’. We work on gaining a sense of awareness, creating a sense of safety and autonomy whilst developing a deep understanding of the feelings and sensations in our body. Stress and trauma can damage our capacity to emotionally self-regulate. Yoga can help with this.

Sessions may include therapeutic yoga, psycho - education, cultivating restful states, working with developmental movement patterns and sensory integration.

Some of the benefits of Yoga therapy are:

  • Improved self awareness: both body and mind

  • Developing the ability to self regulate across environments and demands

  • Developing balance, and the ability to relax and release tension, fear and frustration

  • Reduce stress reaction and improve resilience

  • Improve immune functioning

  • Improve quality & quantity of sleep

  • Enhance a sense of wellbeing, calm and peace

  • Enhance a sense of emotional balance

My personal yoga journey began in 2000 when I attended my first yoga class, since this first class my yoga practice has continued to be my companion in daily life. I have trained with some of the leading practitioners in many different styles of yoga and movement. I am a registered yoga teacher and undertook my initial teacher training diploma with Yoga campus in London. I have since taken many yoga and movement based trainings some of which include: Restorative yoga level 1 & 2, Yin yoga, Somatics, Yoga Nidra, iRest, infant movement development, Feldenkrais and trauma informed yoga practices.

I was on the first cohort of the pioneering British Psychological Society accredited Yoga therapy for Children and Adolescents 2 year training. I have taught on a number of yoga trainings around the U.K.
