Adoption support fund

Adoption has changed tremendously in the last 30 years. In the past, most adopted children were relinquished by their birth parents as infants. Now, the very great majority of children who go on to be adopted are removed from their birth families because they have experienced trauma within their birth families; in 2014-15, 74% of adopted children had suffered abuse and neglect. pac-uk.org

The journey of adoption for both child and parent can be emotionally difficult. I hear often from parents of adopted children that they feel alone, that other parents, teachers and even family members don’t understand the challenges they can face on a daily basis. There is growing evidence that adopted and permanently placed children’s early experiences continue to have an impact on their outcomes long after they move to their adoptive families. The ASF was set up in recognition of the ongoing therapeutic support that children and their families need. I am an approved therapist for Lincolnshire County Councils Post Adoption team, and can offer a number of therapeutic interventions such as: DDP informed practice, Therapeutic yoga & Mindfulness, Creative arts therapies (including life story work) and Theraputic parenting.

CHILD AND FAMILY THERAPY

Parenting in the modern world can be difficult, parents can often find themselves exhausted and overwhelmed. So many of us are parenting today without the extended network and community that generations before us experienced. Where do we turn when we need extra support or help for our family?

I work with children and their families therapeutically to build connection and overcome difficulties they may be facing in life. These difficulties may be related to a specific need or an ongoing issue such as family breakdown, bereavement or anxiety disorders. You may also be looking for help with parenting strategies for parenting a child with a neurodevelopment condition or attachment difficulties. I offer one to one support for a child or adolescent or Family support. It can be incredibly helpful for a child experiencing difficulties to know their parents are really trying to understand them. With the right help, difficult life events can also be opportunities to deepen relationships within your family.

WORK IN SCHOOLS

Children in the U.K spend an average of 32.5 hours a week in school. For some this can be a happy time, learning and socialising and for others it can feel like a challenge just to walk through the gates.

More and more schools are now recognising the needs of student’s emotional welfare and the difficulty school can present for some pupils. I have worked in mainstream and specialist education settings for a number of years delivering time limited specific pieces of work or ongoing support for individual pupils & group work. I also offer training and wellbeing days for staff and parent liason work offering a bridge between home and school life.

Early support allows children’s difficulties to be addressed before they grow unmanageable, teachers and support staff can be instrumental in children feeling heard and contained. Providing staff with time and space to develop effective strategies can ensure children are given the best chance to succeed.

I am currently the lead therapist for a school in Lincolnshire and am also a service provider for the mental health charity Beyond who provide access to funding for therapeutic interventions in school.
